Mawj, the Arabic word for wave موجة, is a tribute to the long afternoons by the Mediterranean Sea shared among good friends. 

Mawj began, as all good stories do, with three friends and wine lovers, Julien Fouret, Abdo Nassar, and Maher Harb. As colleagues, Abdo and Maher had worked side by side for years at Maher’s family winery, Sept, and when the opportunity arose to steward some of the oldest Grenache and Mourvèdre vines on the Mediterranean coast, they didn’t think twice. 

The Mawj vineyards are organic and have been family-farmed for 26 years on steep slopes overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in the village of Edde. Rooted deep in limestone and clay soils, the vines rise toward the sun and breathe in the salty sea breeze, shaped by the meeting of earth, wind, and light. Facing the vast blue horizon every day, they draw their character from this singular landscape, giving birth to a terroir that is both vibrant and deeply Mediterranean.

The Mawj team continues in this tradition focusing on ancient Mediterranean Lebanese varieties like Obeideh, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Semillon, Vermentino, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc. Like the Phoenicians who introduced Mourvèdre to Spain around 500 BCE, their passion is to showcase the unique expression of these grape varieties in their native terroir. 

The Mawj range includes three wines: Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Lunatic. Grenache and Mourvèdre are the permanent reds of the collection, produced year after year. Lunatic, and as the name suggests, reflects the idea of constant evolution: the white variety or blend shifts every one or two vintages, offering each time a new surprise to the palate, yet always faithful to the fresh, crisp, and sun-driven identity of the Mediterranean terroir.

All of Mawj’s wines are fermented with wild yeast from the vineyards and cellar and are free from enological additives. Their wines are vinified and matured on the lees in steel to preserve the most honest and lively expression of both the variety and the Lebanese terroir. A small amount of sulphur is added before bottling where necessary. 

The Mawj motto is “un vin de copain”, meaning “a wine of friendship,” made to be shared as an everyday celebration.
