  • Somló, one of Hungary’s smallest yet most distinctive historical wine regions, lies in Veszprém County near Lake Balaton. Known for its volcanic terroir, mineral-rich basalt soils, and unique microclimate, it produces striking white wines with high acidity, minerality, and aging potential—once even famed for their medicinal qualities and dubbed "wedding night wine." The region centers around the solitary Somló Hill and includes the Nagy-Somló PDO and the smaller Somló PDO. With a winemaking history dating back to the 12th century, Somló survived Ottoman rule, phylloxera, and collectivization, and is now experiencing a revival led by passionate smallholders and a few major players. Its wines, often made from indigenous varieties like Juhfark, Furmint, and Olaszrizling, are traditionally aged in old oak and crafted as either field blends or single varietals. Somló is also emerging as a hub for traditional-method sparkling wines.
